The words ASBESTOS breaches are becoming more common:

The Courier mail published an article last week about a Chinese construction “giant” who escaped with a paltry fine for using lethal asbestos-laced building products in Brisbane’s “tower of power” (as the Journalist calls it)

The article goes on with “Australian Border Force slapped three fines on building products giant Yuanda, which supplied asbestos-tainted gaskets for the $650million Queensland Government Executive Building last year. Yuanda also supplied contaminated roofing panels for a children’s hospital in Perth. Border Force refused to say how much Yuanda had been fined-but revealed the maximum penalty was $15,750 per offence

This last point I re read several times, thinking that a couple of “zeros” had been missed out of the article, but my ongoing research found this to be true! Unbelievable!!

It is believed that (stated by the Federal Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency) that there were 64 Asbestos seizures at the border last financial year. The agency CEO stated, “this is just the tip of the iceberg, no one has had a kick in the back side for flouting the asbestos ban”

“The certification documents from China really do not hold any water. The product comes out of China, and China still mines asbestos, you are going to see a degree of contamination. In cement board, they still use asbestos in the mix”

Australia banned asbestos in 2003, but China does not classify CHRYSOTILE (or white asbestos) as asbestos, so manufacturers often declare goods containing it to be “asbestos free’, which they believe to be true??

The article also reveals that “border force has also detected arsenic in imported children’s crayons in the past 12 months. And 2 brands of quad bikes were recalled in recent weeks after asbestos was found in brake parts. Border Force identified 8643 shipments as “high risk” for asbestos during 2016-2017, but examined only 761”.

Imagine if they had been able to examine ALL the identified ones?

We are led to believe that Asbestos is under control, because WE have banned it in building materials, have legislation in place, but this article made me think, we are living in a “false sense of security” about this potential killer!

Worth consideration and discussion at all levels!
